#bostongo got my son and I addicted to Go over the past few Saturdays. He suggested 321go.org as a good learning place, but the site has not come back up after a server crash in 2013. I found this to be an excellent starting guide: The Interactive Way to Go After spending 30 minutes with TIWG, tsumego problems started to make sense. Nearly any search on Go will bring you to Sensei's Library. It is way too dense for me to learn from, even the introductory pages, but it is an excellent reference. Other than that, I've been doing tsumego on goproblems.com and Tsumego Pro (Android) to practice and playing 9x9 games with a guy I work with at lunch. I've also created an account on Dragon Go Server, a turn-based Go server. Send me a personal message (on this board) if you're interested in starting a game. Based on what I could find, I ranked myself at 29kyu.

Can PM me your username at DragonGo? I've submitted problems to GoProblems.com. You can also play against the world and what live play including big tournaments at KGS (http://www.gokgs.com/)Pandanet is another go server but if you access it from Japan you will be asked to pay for access. They charge Japanese...Not fair.

I found you on DragonGo and challenged you to a 5X5 Game.
All legal moves must be played.
Black should always win.
I'll try to post the progress here.
You play first as black.

Accepted. I see your rank is hidden. I have little understanding of 布石, but on such a small board, I don't think it applies. My placement makes sense to me for 序盤 on this size. And I can practice recognizing kanji for Go terms.
If anybody wants to follow along, we're game #897946 on DGS.
I did look at Pandanet, a bit at KGS and at WING (the android client lets you do phone to phone games over bluetooth), but between kids and JCP and work, I don't have time to sit through a full game. Turn-based seemed like a good place to start.

321go.org is back! I haven't had a chance to look around yet. Tonight. I'm at work, and if I start looking around, I will lose the afternoon.

That is great news. How they still have the database so I don't have to start over. I probably should...I'm so rusty. ETA: HERE is the link. They have the database and have added ranks so I'm only 17 Kyu and yellow. I'm in Class 5 with 364 problems completed.

My view after about 2 months of playing: The Interactive Way to Go is the best place for a quick "what are the rules?" 321Go is a much more in depth "how do I play" that tracks your progress and makes a estimate of your ranking. I'm currently in book 2. I've signed up for the GoGameGuru class/newsletter. Seems quite in depth, but once you run through the three lessons on the website, you get a weekly (? - I think, haven't received my first one yet) email with the following lessons. Seems like a very slow pace. I'm still doing the daily easy problems in Tsumego Pro and run through the included 50 basic problems fairly regularly. There are still a couple that trip me up, so haven't graduated myself to the easy problems yet. I also bought the first basic extension pack (another 150 problems). The ranking algorithm is seriously wonky - (there is no way I'm 15kyu), so ignore that, but I still really recommend this. I bought a copy of "Go: A Complete Introduction to the Game" by Cho Chikun. I am not finished reading it, and it is the only Go book I've read. It is interesting. I'll stick a review in a new topic. I also have a copy of "The Second Book of Go" by Richard Bozulich on the way.

#BostonGo: What do the colours on 321go.org mean? It took me a few minutes to figure out what you meant by "yellow." I'm white (and currently 27kyu). They need to finish their translations. There's a lot of Dutch left around that site. Fortunately, Google Translate does a much better job with Dutch than it does with Japanese.

I think they just created the colors to be like martial arts belts.

You are playing too well. You have me on the run. I'm mildly suspicious. Have you tried using the Japanese character button in the menu bar on the posting page yet?
